| Ride through the paths of ancient Athens |
| |
From our starting point, get to Makrigiani Str. and then to the Dionissiou Areopagitou pedestrian walkway, which will be the key point in your tour. To your right, at the end of the road, you see the remains of the Temple of Olympian Zeus , which used to be one of the largest ancient Greek temples. It is situated in front of Hadrian's Arch, the gateway to the city in Roman times. Straight ahead from Makrigiani Str. you reach Vironos Str. and find yourself right in the heart of Plaka, the old town section of Athens at the foot of the Acropolis, where the atmosphere is enhanced by ancient monuments and Byzantine churches. Plaka has two main streets: Kydatheneon Str. and Adrianou str. Once you keep these two streets in mind, you can wander around and you will always find your way back. Start your tour from the Lysikrates Monument , and continue to Aerides, the eight-sided monument dedicated to the Winds, just a block up from Adrianou on Aeolou Str. Wander around the slopes of the Acropolis and get in the maze of small Cycladic houses that make up the Anafiotika neighborhood.
Finally try to find Pandrossou Str. and the Cathedral. In the shadow of the cathedral, there is a small Byzantine church called Agios Eleftherios. Nearby at Agia Filothei Str. and on your way back from Plaka, you will find the church of Agios Andreas and the seat of the Archbishop of Greece. Back to Dionissiou Areopagitou Str., straight ahead, you reach the Roman Theater of Herod Atticus and the rock of Areopagus with its magnificent panoramic views of Athens . From this spot, St. Paul preached to the people of Athens in AD 51 and the tablet embedded in the stone commemorates this event together with his message. Afterwards, continue back around the Acropolis and down the hill, through Apostolou Pavlou street . You can reach the Ancient Agora from the dirt road to your right or if you continue your way, you are going to end up at the Thission. This temple was built in 449 BC and is almost intact. At the end of Apostolou Pavlou street following Ermou Str. at the Kerameikos, the ancient cemetery of Athens. This suggested bicycle tour of Athens utilizes mostly the paved pathways that connect the main Archaeological sites of Athens and offers a unique view of the city. |
